Los Angeles Breast Reduction Frequently Asked Questions

What will my breasts look like after surgery?
Our goal for your breast reduction is to simultaneously improve the size, shape, and position of your breasts. This involves attention to your overall body shape as well as that of your breasts, so that the final result gives your figure a balanced and pleasing appearance. You can view before and after breast reduction photos at our Photo Gallery.

How long does the surgery take and what kind of anesthesia is used?
Usually breast reduction surgery takes from three to five hours depending on the size of your breasts and the amount of change necessary to improve their size and shape. The procedure is usually done with general anesthesia, administered by a physician anesthesiologist. Most operations are done as outpatient surgeries, sometimes with overnight stay at a skilled nursing facility. In order to maintain your comfort and safety at Rodeo Drive Breast Reduction, we perform our breast surgery in our fully certified on-site surgery center.

Rodeo Drive Breast Reduction Is there a lot of bruising afterwards, and how long will it last?
Some patients have little or no bruising. A few experience five to seven days of purple discoloration around the breasts. While there is always some swelling after the procedure for at least seven to fourteen days, you will see an immediate and dramatic improvement in the size and shape of your breasts.

Where are the incisions placed during breast reduction surgery?
In general, the incisions take the shape of an anchor on the front of the breast with a vertical incision downward from the nipple and the base of the anchor under the breast. There is also an incision around the areola of the nipple, so that it can be repositioned upward. Breast reduction surgery always creates scars. It is best to think of the procedure as a trade-off between new scars in exchange for improved sizes, shape, and position of the breasts. For some people this is a very worthwhile trade.

Can breast reduction procedure be done using liposuction?
In some cases it can. If the amount of tissue to be removed is moderate, and the skin has not been overstretched then liposuction may be an option. Your plastic surgeon will advise you about using liposuction for the procedure during your consultation.

Is a breast reduction permanent?
Breast reduction surgery usually makes a permanent change in the size of your breasts. The shape may change over time, and if you gain a great deal of weight some of the fat will likely go to the breasts. But in general, the breasts will not become appreciably larger following a breast reduction procedure.

I have trouble with back pain and neck pain from my large breasts. Will my insurance pay for breast reduction surgery?
Your insurance might pay for your procedure. This is especially the case with people who have symptoms from their large breasts. Insurance coverage can be complicated and usually requires investigation of benefits and obtaining formal pre-approval from your insurance company. We will help you investigate your insurance benefits to determine if you have coverage for the procedure.

What is the Rodeo Drive Shaped for Fashion Breast Reduction™?
This innovative approach to breast reduction surgery works to provide not only smaller breasts, but also breasts that have a pleasing overall shape and match the rest of your body's proportions. By concentrating on shape as well as simply on size, our goal is for you to be able to wear the fashion sold by the boutiques that are our neighbors right here on Rodeo Drive. The procedure is unusual and you can read more detail about this type of breast reduction in Los Angeles.

Is there much pain following the procedure?
All of our breast reduction surgeries are performed using the techniques of our Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery Rapid Recovery program, which serves to minimize discomfort following the procedure. By taking careful and proactive steps to minimize pain, such as placing long-term anesthetic into all areas where we work during surgery, we find that almost all of our patients report minimal discomfort following even large procedures such as breast reduction.

Do you offer other plastic surgery procedures?
Yes, our expert plastic surgeon offers all plastic surgery procedures including rhinoplasty, facelift, tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast augmentation.
